What is Halloween?

Originally, Halloween was an Irish Celtic festival. As the Celtic calendar didn’t end on December 31, but rather on October 31, it was the Celtic New Year. This last night was then the night of the god of death (Samain).

Why do we dress up on Halloween?

The Celts celebrated the god of death, Samain, on October 31. According to belief, the dead visited the living on this day. So, to try out ghosts, the living dressed up as strange creatures.

Why do we eat candy on Halloween?

As Halloween was a festival of the dead, the Celts were afraid of ghosts. To be on the safe side, the Celts decided to make offerings to ghosts in the form of cakes and apples at the entrance to the village. Thanks to Irish immigration, Americans discovered this tradition and adapted it for children. Thus was born Halloween and the tradition of ringing doorbells for candy.
